That Settles It. There Really Ain't No Sanity Clause

One question for the really politically-tuned-in reader: just how many bills attempting to ban references to Christmas will be affected by this?

HRES 579 IH

109th CONGRESS

1st Session

H. RES. 579

Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected.

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

December 6, 2005

Mrs. JO ANN DAVIS of Virginia (for herself, Mr. BARTLETT of Maryland, Mr. GOODE, and Mr. JONES of North Carolina) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Government Reform

RESOLUTION

Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected.

Whereas Christmas is a national holiday celebrated on December 25; and

Whereas the Framers intended that the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States would prohibit the establishment of religion, not prohibit any mention of religion or reference to God in civic dialog: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved , That the House of Representatives--

(1) recognizes the importance of the symbols and traditions of Christmas;

(2) strongly disapproves of attempts to ban references to Christmas; and

(3) expresses support for the use of these symbols and traditions.

    Well, hell. I'm glad that's taken care of. Now we can get to all those little fussy details like the war and the economy and the fact that we're still torturing people and members of the legislature think that's peachy.

    For some reason, this stuff doesn't really fill me with the Christmas *or* holiday spirit. It kinda makes me want to wade into Congress with a broom.

    Sadly enough, I have to live in JoAnn Davis's district. She is also well-known for missing important votes and having a hard-on for defense spending, thanks to the 2 or 3 military bases that she represents. At least she won't be running unopposed when she goes for reelection next year, but the candidate, Sean McDonnell, doesn't have a chance in hell of winning. Sigh.

    Resolved that Kathy of R--

    1. thinks the symbols and traditions of Christmas are a fairly recent invention;
    2. strongly disapproves of attempts to foist Christmas on nonbelievers and even on believers before Thanksgiving; and
    3. expresses support for banning the whole damned thing.

    Thank heavens! Now I can sleep at night, knowing that Christmas is protected by law from its archenemy, Valentines's Day.

    However, does this mean that Bill O'Reilly is out of a job?
