No one really beats the reaper. Saw an obit somewhere calling FST one of the "forerunners" of SNL, which to me is kind of like saying that Beyond the Fringe begat MADtv or that Peter Sellers is a precursor to Adam Sandler. But I'm just being prickly because the best minds of a generation are dying off.
Thank you, Mr Riley. They were (to R Porrofatto) our Goons, and to surreal laughter our Beatles, perhaps best listened to in a darkened room, in the '70s...
OK, I'll bite. This guy is either someone who fronted a late-1950's Indianapolis children's television program, or a Republican politician who promoted Reagan but got his tit caught in a wringer somewhere.
All I can go is goddam. You know how you wait for one more Vonnegut book and then you hear and all you can go is goddam? Or one more Townes Van Zandt song? All I can go is goddam. Here's hoping there's a Firesign Basement Tapes equivalent now to come to the fore. In the world of smart funny, he and FT were pretty much it. He sure made my world happier.
