Carole was one of the four girls murdered when white terrorists blew up the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham in 1963. The others killed in the explosion (which killed them when they were in Sunday school) included Denise McNair (a classmate of Condoleeza Rice), Addie Mae Collins and Cynthia Wesley.
While these four girls were killed outright, there were over 20 other injured.
Spike Lee made a movie about them, Joan Baez sang a song about them, Nina Simone composed and sang their lives.
My parents put me in front of the television (I was barely old enouth to remember) and told me to "witness."

I don't know who the hell she is, but that's a great picture!
